For most parents, Christmastime ushers in the seasonal gift giving predicaments for their children which are ethically difficult to manage. As children get older and handmade gifts are not an option anymore parents are left with the dilemma of how they can teach their child to give meaningful gifts, even when the child is flat broke! Bartering physical labor in return for gifts insures a child has something of worth invested in the gift and can assure children understand and feel the profound joy of heartfelt gift giving.

Now before you say you don’t journal, hear me out. Think of journaling as tapping into the conversation playing in your head and all you are doing is taking notes. They can be cryptic or long-form. They don’t need to make sense. Imagine that as you write, you free. These words and thoughts are no longer stored in your body. You release and cleanse as you write. Even 5 or 10 minutes of journaling can make a big difference in releasing your chatter and creating space for new thoughts. Feel free to discard what you write.

Tickets – And I don’t mean paying for your son’s/daughter’s first speeding ticket either (though, that’s an idea), I’m talking about sports tickets…or if you’re son/daughter is not into sports, concert tickets. If they’re not into music either, then I ask: what is wrong with them! In all seriousness, throwing a pair of football/hockey/concert tickets at your kid will make their eyes aglow. But, a word of advice if I may? Dads, if you like golf, that’s great – but unless your son/daughter shares the same interest, don’t get him golfing tickets. Just don’t.

How about some exercise to round out the day? When you’re done making crafts, you can take a stroll along the Story Trail. Follow along with author Millicent E. Selsam’s book, Big Tracks, Little Tracks: Following Animal Prints, illustrated by Marlene Hill Donnelly. The book is ideal for toddlers, but adventurers of any age can look for the many plants and animals that inhabit the Boise foothills. The trail is open each day from sunrise to sunset.

Pick up a standard 4 x 6 photo album and place inside a picture of your child. If you have a class portrait, a copy of that would be great as well! Have your child add a little note to the teacher telling her how much he/she enjoys the class.

You don’t need to be a morning person to develop a morning routine that supports you. Night owls will have a different routine than someone who rises at 5 am. But the same principles apply. Just avoid rolling out of bed and right into your day without directing your thought and actions toward the qualities you want. Create your day in the first hour and you’ll be set for the rest of it to flow.
